There is a great argument that leaders are born and not made. And I subscribe to this school of thought, seeing the overwhelming leadership style and qualities of the man called 'Hon. Ben Rollands Igbakpa': A leader per excellence; A Round peg in a Round Hole with an outstanding leadership quite different from the ones being experienced in Delta State and Nigeria at large. Before I extol the leadership style and qualities of the man called Hon. Ben Rollands Igbakpa, it is very pertinent to explain what is meant by the term leadership and the most popular leadership styles in the world today.
Leadership is the ability of an individual or a group of individuals to influence and guide followers or other members of an organization. Leadership involves making sound and sometimes difficult decisions, creating and articulating a clear vision, establishing achievable goals and providing followers with the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve those goals. The most popular leadership styles in the world today are Autocratic leadership style and Democratic/Participatory leadership style. These leadership styles are the most popular adopted by leaders when dealing with their followers/ subordinates especially relating to politics or political leadership.
Hon Ben Igbakpa is a leader who possesses the Democratic/ Participatory leadership style due to his liberal approach in dealing with people/political issues and a good listener to his constituents/ followers. He has a clear vision for the people of Ethiope Federal Constituency. Posterity will not forgive me if I fail to adopt a theory to qualify and articulate the leadership style and qualities of the man called Hon. Ben Rollands Igbakpa. The Great Man theory best suits Hon. Igbakpa's leadership style and qualities. The Great Man theory assumes that the traits of leadership are intrinsic. That simply means that great leaders are born they are not made. This theory sees great leaders as those who are destined by birth to become a leader. Furthermore, the belief was that great leaders will rise when confronted with the appropriate situation. The theory was popularized by Thomas Carlyle, a writer and teacher.
Hon Ben Igbakpa is a great leader who is destined with great leadership qualities which includes high sense of responsibility, good listener, intelligence, creativity and kind hearted which makes him stand out amongst other leaders in Delta State and Nigeria at large. No wonder at the early age of 6, he was made a class prefect at Onogbore primary school, Ovade by his class teacher due to his outstanding leadership qualities embedded in him right from birth.
He contested in 2007 and won as member representing Ethiope West in Delta State House of Assembly. Upon completion of that elective position, Hon. Igbakpa was appointed as a Commissioner for Transport in Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan administration; Hon Igbakpa made marks in the sands of time as he was rated among the innovative and most outstanding commissioner in that administration.
Ben Igbakpa as is popularly known in Delta State, Nigeria and the word at large is a born leader with the requisite skills and ability to manage populace with little or no supervision to achieve result. His achievements transcends ethnic, regional and political divides. As his achievements as a member who represented Ethiope West at Delta State House of Assembly and as a Commissioner for Transport in Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan administration speaks volume. Some of these laudable achievements include when he was commissioner for Transport Delta State paraded the cheapest transport fare in Nigeria because his inputs made His Excellency, the governor, to invest hugely in the transport sector. Also during first two years of his appointment as commissioner, Delta State urban mass transit scheme, had a total of 605 buses. As a member of the Delta State House of Assembly who represented Ethiope West, he moved various motions on the floor of the house bothering on matters of public concerns and also sponsored Bills in which some were passed into law. His contribution to Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) bill cannot be overemphasized.
Hon. Ben Igbakpa introduced a skill acquisition scheme across the three kingdoms in Ethiope West Local Government Area where youths are trained in the following areas; Welding and fabrication, Fashion and Designing, Catering services, Beautification/ Hair dressing and Computer and Information Technology.
Also as part of his contribution to Infrastructural development as a representative of Ethiope West constituency at the Delta State house of Assembly, he built the multi-purpose James Onanefe Ibori Civic Center in Oghara, the construction of a Police Post Ovade Oghara, Reactivation of Water-Board, Oghara, Solar Water Scheme Ijomi-Oghara, Establishment and Building of Merciful Orphanage Home Ogharefe, Solar Water Scheme-Ovade many more. Also The establishment and construction of Primary Health Care Center Ijomi -Oghara, The supply of Medical equipments to Hospitals in Oghara, Jesse and Mosogar. These achievements were remarkable as they affected the lives of the people positively.
Hon. Ben Rollands Igbakpa's educational credentials is one that is remarkable. The Political Gladiator was born August 28 1966. He attended Onogbore primary school, Ovade and Ogini Grammar School Ogharefe Oghara, he later proceeded to Delta State University, Abraka where he studied Business Administration and Masters in Public Administration in the same citadel of learning. Ben Igbakpa also has a diploma in computer studies. Because of his gentle nature and zeal for self reliance he attended the foremost London Business School.
Hon Ben Igbakpa is a round peg in a round hole and having successfully represented his constituents (Ethiope West) at Delta State House of Assembly and later Commissioner for Transport, it is high time to bestowed upon him the mantle of leadership to represent the good people of Ethiope Federal Constituency at the green chamber in Abuja, as we strongly believe he is a round peg in a round hole that will lead Ethiope Federal Constituency to a state of greatness and all round opportunities.
