The National Youth Service in Nigeria is a mandatory program meant to
be undergone by graduates under the age of 30 in Nigeria has been in
place for decades.
The aim of the program which is to make youth
to render selfless service to their fatherland and encourage multi
cultural and multi ethnic mixing in Nigeria has been taken for granted
and abuse by the private sectors in the country. As the saying said
"Corper go, Corper come" has been the norm of the private sectors.
Every
nation knows that the collaboration of the government bodies and the
private sectors work towards the growth of a nation, but when it comes
to the issue of National Youth Service, private sectors such as schools,
NGOs, consumer businesses always want to cheat or abuse the government
system.
Many private sectors have stopped employing workers, all
what they depend on are graduates who are serving their fatherland and
been paid monthly allowances by the government. By so doing, instead of a
particular private business ownership to employ one or two post NYSC
graduates to his/her job, it is seen that such people go after serving
youth corps members with the belief that they can pay them small money
to stay for one year in which another year others new once will also
come to replace them.
Therefore, a salary of a bonafide
professional in such job will cater for up to six or more corps members
who do not care as far as they wish to serve their fatherland and
collect their major stipends "allawee" from the government, which make
them not to care about the small amount of #3000, #5000, or #10000 being
paid to them at their place of primary assisgnment.
But after
the one year, the private sectors will kick them out and collect new
corps members, remember "Corper go, Corper come". NYSC is a selfless
service of our youths to our nation, not for some people to take
advantage of the scheme and abuse it. I think government should
stop posting corps members to private industries with the belief that
when they are short of staff they will employ fulltime professional post
NYSC graduates which will increase the rate of employment in the
country.
